A Barretinha

This beret is one of my favourite patterns from “Malhas Portuguesas”. It is a traditional hat from the Portuguese island of Corvo (in the Azores archipelago). It is steeped in the old sailor tradition of that small island, but it feels like it could easily be part of those knitwear “must-haves” for trendy modern wardrobes (“it’s like a hipstery-ethnic-boho-whathever piece…”), following the steps of some British and Russian designs. This took me only 2 days of knitting and was made out of a handspun merino skein. It will be taken to Russia in a few months and it already has the new owner’s name (my sister) in Cyrillics, on the inside. It’s practical, stylish and warm.  Just what I wanted.
